Aim of award

This award was established in 2010 through the generosity of Routledge and is named after Prof Tom Reilly (1941-2009) who was an Honorary Fellow of BASES. The prize is £500 (book token). This award is given annually for an outstanding doctoral dissertation made in the area of sport and/or exercise sciences by a BASES member.

Award criteria

• The applicant must be a member of BASES.
• The applicant must be within one year of successfully completing a PhD. Applicants must provide a formal letter confirming their award or a graduation certificate.
• Only one submission per Department is permissible.
• Applications will be reviewed and judged on scientific merit, methodological rigour and standard of presentation.
• Applications not adhering to the award criteria will not be marked.
• The decision is final in all cases and no correspondence will be entered into.
• These awards will not be made in the absence of submissions of sufficient merit.
• The applicant’s project supervisor must submit 1 electronic copy of the completed application form to the BASES Office Manager, officemanager@bases.org.uk, by the closing date with the following statement: I certify that the applicant meets the award criteria and this application is supported by the Head of Department and me.
• Attached to this e-mail should be a file containing the applicant’s name and a condensed version of the dissertation (Up to 2,500 words maximum for quantitative and 3,000 words for mixed methods and qualitative research). Both word limits exclude the reference list at the end of the dissertation but include all other words in the document. No abstract is necessary. Submissions should be typed in Journal of Sports Sciences format.
• Within six weeks of receiving the award letter, the recipient of the award shall submit an article for consideration for The Sport and Exercise Scientist. The article shall comply with’ Guidelines for Contributors to The Sport and Exercise Scientist’. The emphasis of the article should be on contributing to the continuing professional development of sport and exercise scientists by promoting evidence-based practice. The award winner must liaise with the TSES Editor (editor@bases.org.uk) prior to writing the article.
