Resources from the Royal Osteoporosis Society

21st August 2023

We have been made aware by the Royal Osteoporosis Society about some new and recent resources, plus a forthcoming event that our members may find useful.

BASES was a partner organisation back in 2018 that helped to produce a Consensus Statement on Physical Activity and Exercise and Osteoporosis and a summary Quick Guide. These resources were for exercise and health professionals to establish effective exercise strategies to promote bone strength and to clarify and often to reassure about safety issues in terms of exercise risking fracture.

Last year, the ROS took this work to publication in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and they received great coverage across the media and very positive feedback.

Since then, the ROS has worked with Katherine Brooke Wavell and Richard Blagrove from Loughborough University and has produced a series to short films explaining how to build up the intensity of impact exercise and work on progressive muscle resistance exercise to optimise bone strength. Their new (public facing) resources are here and a discussion about their development is here.

In addition, the ROS has their Scientific Conference in September for which there are still some places available, including a one day option, when Katherine and Richard will be facilitating workshops to explain the exercise plans they have developed.

A summary of the resources is below:
