Promoting Professional Standards

1st June 2023

BASES is the professional body for sport and exercise sciences in the UK. We administer and award the following accreditations and certifications which enable professionals working in sport and exercise science to demonstrate to employers and clients that they possess the knowledge and skills to practice safely, effectively and independently as a sport and exercise scientist:

BASES Accreditation is recognised as the benchmark professional standard within the sport and exercise science sector, awarded to practitioners who are deemed by the Association to have demonstrated competencies to the required high standards necessary to provide independent Quality Assurance to clients, service users and the wider public, alongside gaining professional recognition. BASES Accreditation is awarded for a five-year period, at which point members need to apply for Re-accreditation to retain accredited status.

BASES High Performance Sport Accreditation (HPSA) is a specialist accreditation for those individuals providing sport science services to high performance and elite sport programmes. HPSA is targeted at those with extensive experience and a track record of providing successful, structured and ongoing scientific support, or delivering or leading excellent and innovative sport science services that impact in high performance environments. HPSA is for a five-year term.

Chartered Scientist represents a single chartered mark for all scientists, recognising high levels of professionalism and competence in science. BASES is a Licensed Member Body of the Science Council, enabling us to award Chartered Scientist status to members who meet the criteria. All BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientists are eligible to become Chartered Scientists, having demonstrated the required competencies through the BASES Accreditation application process. Chartered Scientist status is renewed annually. Information highlighting the benefits of becoming a Chartered Scientist, can be found here.

The window to apply for the above is now open and will close 1 July 2023.
