Preliminary practical guidelines on sex and gender

22nd January 2024

Sport and exercise researchers and practitioners make daily decisions about the research participant’s and/or client’s sex and gender identity. BASES members, Dr Kotryna Fraser, Prof Alun Williams FBASES, Thirsha de Silva, Dr Georgina Stebbings and Prof Sue Backhouse FBASES, recently authored an open-access article in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport: Making competent decisions in sport and exercise science and sports medicine: Preliminary practical guidelines on sex and gender.

This paper offers a brief overview of the existing practices and outlines two-step practical guidelines to help professionals make sound decisions and create welcoming spaces. These guidelines and practical tips extend to educators and can help inform one’s pedagogy.
